Review: Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil

11:11:00 PM

Aside from mascara, I also use eyeliner almost everyday. Whenever I go out I almost always wear eyeliner + mascara, and depending on the occasions I would substitute regularly between a pencil eyeliner, a liquid eyeliner, and gel eyeliner.

For everyday use I like to wear pencil eyeliners because the color is more light and subtle compared to liquid and/or gel eyeliners. It's also easier to apply and would take less time to wear. But the problem is: finding a good pencil eyeliner that would stay put on my eyelids!

It is surprisingly hard to find pencil eyeliners that would stay on my OILY eyelids. Usually, the pencil liner would smudge in just a few hours on my eyelids. I hate it, especially on the lines under my eyes, the ugly smudges makes my eyes looks dark and more "gothic" than "smokey", LOL.

Yes, the dilemma of oily eyelids...
The biggest problem of oily eyelids is how it won't keep any eye makeup for long (unless you wear some base). Those with oily eyelids would experience how eyeshadows would run off it's colors pretty fast unless we wear some base, mascara would eventually runs on our eyelids, and eyeliners would be the first to smudge.

And you know what, after trying a few different brands I still haven't find a good pencil liner that would actually stay put on my oily eyelids. The pencil liner that I mostly wear right now is the one from Revlon. Don't get me wrong, just like any other pencil liner that I've tried it would eventually smudge after a few hours too, but I noticed that it doesn't smudge really bad like the other pencil eyeliners. But I don't like the stiff and dry tip of the pencil, it makes it hard to glide on eyelids therefore it's hard to create a smooth lines with it.

Because of those reasons I started looking for a new pencil eyeliner and got curious with this Estee Lauder eyeliner pencil because I saw that it has these words in the packaging:

"Estee Lauder Double Wear
Stay-in-Place
Eye pencil"

The "stay-in-place" words made me buy it. And after wearing it for a few months here's what I think about it:

My first impression of this eye pencil is how soft the tip of the pencil is. The soft tip makes it glides more easily compared to Revlon eye pencil and one stroke is usually enough because of the thick color. But although it gives out a strong color, it also smudge pretty easily :(

I actually love the result of this eyeliner on my eyes (especially for smokey eye makeup), because of the bold color and because of how effortless it is to use, but sadly it is also hard to clean even with my best eye makeup remover.

It is water resistant but probably not oil resistant ;p - The water resisting power is also not really strong, I did a water test to it. The color is still there after I ran waters over it, but it looks a bit faded afterwards. When I tried to scrub it the color fades instantly. The staying power is weak considering the "stay-in-place" logo, phew.. :(

Overall, I still prefer the Revlon one even though it's harder to use due to it's hard and stiff pencil tip. And although the color of the Revlon one is less bold like this Estee lauder one but it stays on my oily eyelids a bit longer then this Estee Lauder one. So to sum it up, here's my Pros and Cons:

PROs:
  • Soft tip makes it feels more comfortable on eyelids
  • Glides smoothly on eyelids
  • Color is thick and bold
  • One swipe is usually enough for everyday look. Two swipes or more for night/party look
  • Water Resistant

CONs:
  • The tip is too big, makes it a bit hard to reach some corners on the eyelids
  • It smudges EASILY on oily eyelids, only in a couple hours of wearing it!
  • It's hard to clean
  • The staying power is WEAK despite it's name
  • Water resistant is not too strong either

This pencil liner probably would suits those who have normal or dry eyelids or for those who lives in colder weather, I think this eye pencil is not suited for summer or for those who lives in tropical country (like me) because the hot sun would melt the lines on your eyes pretty fast, making it smudge all over the place and you could end up looking like a goth ;p

 Toodles,
